Digital Desk: Manipur's Churachandpur district became a war zone late Friday night after a violent protest broke out, with protestors setting vehicles on fire and propagating chaos and panic in the city.

Internet connections have been halted while security troops continue to march through the region as there have been isolated reports of conflicts between protesters and police forces.

Even after an agreement was made between the Inspector General and the leader of the student's body, Churachandpur town remains tense. As per reports, people are outraged because the Police Commando forces have not been withdrawn from the district headquarters in spite of the Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum accepting to withdraw the protest.

Reportedly, last night, enraged mobs gathered in the Tuibong Bazar area and resorted to burning tyres on the roads and ringing electric poles in order to make their voices heard in every area. An altercation broke out on the Sielmat Bridge between police and local mobs, contributing to the extremely tense situation.

The report also claimed that LM Khaute, the local MLA for the 58-Churachandpur Assembly Constituency, was trying to avoid the anger of local people after inviting Manipur chief minister N. Biren Singh to the district. Sources claim that Khaute is seen as anti-tribal by residents, hence police have escorted him to Imphal for his protection.

The district is enveloped in a displeased silence as security personnel continues to march in and around it to avoid more chaos.
