Byrnihat, a small town on the border of Assam and Meghalaya, is about 30 km from Assam's Guwahati and 70 km from Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya.

Digital Desk: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Thursday blamed Assam's industries for the poor air quality of Byrnihat. He said that poor air quality in Byrnihat "may be attributed to industrial and other activities along the Assam side."

Byrnihat is recently named as the world's most polluted town by the World Air Quality Report, 2024, released by Swiss air quality technology company IQAir.

In a speech at the Assembly, CM Sangma reiterated that Meghalaya's Byrnihat area's air quality has been found 'satisfactory' by the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB). However, Assam's Byrnihat's air quality is still reflected as 'poor to very poor', as reported by the Continuous Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Station installed in the Central Academy for State Forest Service.

He added, "This indicates that the major sources of air pollution may be attributed to industrial and other activities along the Assam side."

The report also identifies the world's most polluted countries, with Asian countries Bangladesh, Pakistan and India topping the list.
