Digital Desk: Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga has stated that his Mizo National Front (MNF) party is committed to maintaining total prohibition in the state.
His statement came days after a local cable channel claimed that some segments of Mizo society, including certain church leaders, support the reopening of wine shops in the state, according to a statement issued by the MNF on Tuesday.
"The MNF took the news report very seriously." We strongly oppose the abolition of the comprehensive prohibition statute. "We have witnessed the devastating impact of alcohol on Mizo society, which claimed many lives when wine shops were present," Zoramthanga was quoted as saying in the statement.
The station claimed on 15 April that some church leaders, government personnel, and community or local leaders favour selling liquor, according to Zoramthanga, who spoke at a public gathering at the MNF office here on Monday.
He stated that the MNF government introduced 'The Mizoram Liquor (Prohibition) Act 2019' in the wider interest of the churches and the Mizo people.
Fulfilling its election pledge, the MNF passed this law after taking office in 2019 that outlaws the import, export, transit, manufacture, possession, sale, and consumption of alcohol in the state, except for the three autonomous district councils in the state's south.
