Digital Desk: Mumbai and several regions across Maharashtra are grappling with the aftermath of heavy rainfall for the second consecutive day, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a "red" alert for multiple areas including Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Panvel, and the rural parts of Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg. The warning predicts heavy to very heavy rainfall in these regions.
The torrential downpour has already claimed lives and caused significant disruptions. In Mumbai, a tragic incident occurred when a fire sparked by a short circuit led to the death of a 72-year-old woman in the Santacruz area.
Meanwhile, in Palghar, an 18-month-old child lost his life in a heartbreaking accident on the rain-damaged Boisar-Navapur Road. Maher Mohsin, accompanied by his grandfather, Ahmed, fell from their bike after hitting a rain-filled pothole, highlighting the perilous conditions exacerbated by the heavy rains.
Authorities are on high alert, with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) taking proactive measures. All schools, colleges, and educational institutions in Mumbai and several other affected areas have been shut as a precautionary measure. BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagarani urged residents to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel, emphasizing the readiness of disaster management teams deployed across the city.
The IMD's forecast indicates that heavy rainfall is expected to persist in isolated areas of Mumbai until July 12, with moderate to heavy showers predicted across a wide swath of Maharashtra during the same period. This forecast has prompted further closures and disruptions, impacting transportation networks severely.
In response to the weather conditions, the Central Railways has rescheduled several long-distance trains, including the LTT-JYG Express and the BDTS-SFG Bandra Terminus Subedarganj Special. Local train services, though experiencing minor delays, continue to operate with relative normalcy on most lines.
At the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, flight operations faced substantial interruptions, leading to the diversion and cancellation of numerous flights on Monday. Both passengers and airlines have been advised to check flight statuses regularly due to the ongoing weather challenges affecting air traffic.
In light of these developments, airlines like IndiGo and Air India have offered passengers the option to reschedule their flights or obtain full refunds amid the disruptions caused by continuous rainfall and congestion at the Mumbai airport.
