Digital Desk: The Nagaland assembly election has concluded, with state political stalwart and longest-serving chief minister Neiphiu Rio ready to take office for a fifth consecutive term following a convincing victory for his party and its ally, the BJP. In the 60-member Nagaland assembly, the two parties own a total of 37 seats. With this triumph, the septuagenarian leader has surpassed the record of veteran leader S C Jamir, who helmed the northeastern state three times. Rio personally defeated Congress' Seyievelie Sachu, a political newcomer, in the Northern Angami II constituency, helping to emasculate the grand old party in the state where at one time it was entrenched.

Four independent candidates won the polls, while regional parties Naga People's Front won two seats, National People's Party five, Nationalist Congress Party seven, and RPI (Athawale) and LJP (Ram Vilas) each won two seats. The RPI (Atjawale) will support the ruling alliance, bringing the total to 39. The Janata Dal-United has won one seat in the state.
