Guwahati: Adding to the increasing numbers of HIV positive cases in the state, as many as 85 prisoners of Nagaon Central Jail and Special jail has been tested positive with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) in September, a health department official said.


Talking to the media persons, the Superintendent of Nagaon BP Civil Hospital, Dr. L C Nath, said, “Of the 85 prisoners who tested HIV positive, 45 are from special jail while 40 from central jail, Nagaon.”


Dr. Nath added that all are drug-induced HIV positive.

Earlier, 88 people including four, have been tested HIV positive in the Civil Hospital, an official report said.


Sources quoted that most HIV positive inmates are using the same syringe to inject the drugs into themselves, generating more HIV positive cases.


Meanwhile, authority of Central jail and Special jail confirmed the report given by the Superintendent of BP Civil Hospital, Nagaon.
