Digital Desk: The UP government is on a drive for a name-changing binge, lately, it has come to light that the city of Firozabad is set to be renamed Chandranagar.
In keeping with renaming towns and cities with Muslim names, the Firozabad Municipal Corporation approved a resolution requesting to rename the 'Glass City of India,' which is noted for its bulk glass production. The proposal has been forwarded to the Uttar Pradesh government for approval.
This is the second request to be sent to the UP government in the previous 30 days. The Aligarh Municipal Corporation passed a similar decision on November 8 to alter the name 'Aligarh' to Harigarh.
The mayor of Firozabad, Kamini Rathore, acknowledged the development, claiming that the city had been known as Chandranagar since its origin and control under King Chandrasen. "However, it was during Mughal era, after Mughal military commander Firoz Shah defeated Chandrasen that it was renamed as Firozabad," Rathor went on to explain.
Sanjay Pandit, a BJP corporator, introduced a resolution on Friday to rename Firozabad Chandranagar. The resolution was passed after a majority of BJP corporators in the House supported it.
Historical Fact-
According to history, a ruler named Chandrasen founded Firozabad in its earliest days. It was once the Chauhan Rajputs' stronghold. Raja Todar Mal, the finance minister of the Mughal empire during the reign of Emperor Akbar, halted in Asafabad, southeast of contemporary Firozabad, in 1566 on his way back from a pilgrimage to Gaya.
According to legend, the locals insulted him, and when Akbar learned of it, he despatched Firoz Khawaja to demolish the town and rebuild it. The city was later rebuilt and renamed Firozabad in honour of its founder, Firoz Khawaja, whose white marble tomb is located along the road to Agra.
Notably, looking back regarding the name change spree, in 2018, the state government renamed Faizabad as Ayodhya, and Mughalsarai Railway Station in Chandauli district as Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Junction. A year later, Allahabad was renamed Prayagraj.
