Preserve the sanctity of the Zubeen Garg Kshetra as a cultural landmark
Digital Desk: The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has initiated a major eviction drive against unauthorised shops operating near the cremation site of Assam’s legendary singer Zubeen Garg in Sonapur. On 17th October , a group of local entrepreneurs including the owners of different businesses operating in the area like Lakhi Hotel were given official eviction notices asking them to leave the area within the six days.
The official communication, issued under the supervision of Biswa Jyoti Lahkar, Highway Administrator and Project Director of NHAI PIU-Guwahati, stated that the shops were illegally occupying land along National Highway 27. Citing serious safety concerns, the NHAI warned that continued commercial activity on this busy stretch could lead to traffic congestion and potential accidents.
“The unauthorised occupation has been caused by the shop owners on the highway land at KM 17+15/10 of NH-27,” the notice stated. The shop owners were a chance to give their responses during the NHAI office in Guwahati within a period of six days before the actual eviction work can commence. The authorities explained that this might result in fines and eviction on the spot in case of noncompliance.
Authorities confirmed that all affected establishments were located on government-owned highway land. The eviction drive, they added, is being carried out under the provisions of the National Highway (Land and Traffic) Act, 2002, aimed at ensuring public safety and lawful land use.
The crackdown comes as the area has become site of high emotional and public interest following the cremation of Zubeen Garg, who has attracted many people to the area on a daily basis. NHAI assured that the clearance operations would be conducted systematically, with prior notice to all occupants, to minimize disruption while maintaining safety and preserving the sanctity of the Zubeen Garg Kshetra as a cultural landmark.
