The city already includes the longest ropeway in India, stretching 1,820 meters across the Brahmaputra between Guwahati and North Guwahati.
Digital Desk: The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) intends to build a ropeway connecting Guwahati's Kamakhya Railway Station to the Kamakhya temple.
The aerial distance between the railway station on the city's western outskirts and the temple atop the Nilachal Hills on the Brahmaputra River's southern bank is around 1.5 kilometers.
"Kamakhya temple attracts a lot of pilgrims and visitors, and the ropeway can bring value to tourism in Assam's main city," NFR's general manager Anshul Gupta said at an Independence Day celebration.
According to NFR officials, the project, which is still in the proposal stage, will require approval from the Assam government.
If approved, this ropeway will be the city's second, following the 1,820-metre one that connects Guwahati and North Guwahati across the Brahmaputra. It will be India's longest river ropeway when it opens in 2020.
The NFR has also initiated a heritage preservation campaign at the old railway station in Amingaon, North Guwahati. Prior to the opening of the 1,492-metre Saraighat rail-road bridge in 1962, the Amingaon station served as the terminal for trains to and from the rest of the country.
According to Gupta, the NFR generated 43.03% more revenue from January to July of this year than the same time in 2021.
Among other initiatives, the railway zone eliminated 10 level crossing gates in the last seven months by erecting 28 roadways under bridges and six road overbridges.
