Digital Desk: The Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Assam on 14th February, 2026, to inaugurate a series of major infrastructure and development projects aimed at boosting connectivity and digital growth in the North-Eastern Region.

The newly constructed bridge connecting Guwahati and North Guwahati will be named Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu, in honour of the 7th-century Kamrupa king Kumar Bhaskar Varma. The six-lane extradosed Prestressed Concrete (PSC) bridge, built at a cost of approximately ₹3,030 crore, spans the Brahmaputra River and is the first extradosed bridge in Northeast India. It is expected to reduce travel time between Guwahati and North Guwahati to just seven minutes.

Designed to withstand the region’s high seismic activity, the bridge incorporates advanced base isolation technology using friction pendulum bearings. It also features high-performance stay cables and a Bridge Health Monitoring System (BHMS) for real-time structural monitoring, early damage detection, and enhanced safety.

The Prime Minister will begin his visit at around 10:30 AM by landing at the Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) on the Moran Bypass in Dibrugarh, where he will witness an aerial display of fighter aircraft, transport planes, and helicopters. The ELF, the first of its kind in Northeast India, has been developed in coordination with the Indian Air Force. Envisioned as dual-use infrastructure, it can handle fighter aircraft up to 40 tonnes and transport aircraft up to 74 tonnes maximum take-off weight, serving as a critical asset during emergencies and natural disasters.

At around 1 PM, the Prime Minister will visit Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu across the Brahmaputra, followed by the inauguration and foundation-laying of projects worth over Rs5,450 crore at Lachit Ghat in Guwahati.

Among the key projects is the inauguration of the National Data Centre for the North Eastern Region at Amingaon in Kamrup district. The state-of-the-art facility, with a total sanctioned load of 8.5 MW and an average rack capacity of 10 kW per rack, will host mission-critical government applications and function as a disaster recovery centre for other national data centres. The initiative aligns with the Digital India vision and aims to strengthen the region’s ICT infrastructure.

The Prime Minister will also inaugurate the permanent campus of IIM Guwahati, giving a significant boost to higher and management education in the Northeast.

In addition, he will flag off 225 100 electric buses under the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme in Guwahati. The initiative is expected to benefit over Guwahatians  by providing clean, affordable, and reliable public transport, thereby improving urban mobility and quality of life.

The visit underscores the Centre’s continued focus on strengthening infrastructure, enhancing digital capacity, and accelerating overall development in the North-Eastern Region.
