New Delhi: Nalini Sriharan, one of the life term convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, is granted parole for one month by the Tamil Nadu government. Sriharan gets release from the Special Women jail in Vellore after completing surety formalities.

Nalini will step out of jail for the second time. Earlier, in 2019, Nalini stepped out of jail after being granted parole to make arrangements for her daughter's wedding.

The decision of the Tamil Nadu government comes after Nalini's ailing mother S Padma appealed before the court for the release of her daughter on parole. The government counsel informed the Madras High Court on Thursday.

As per reports, the petition was filed by S Padma, citing age-related issues and wanting her daughter by her bedside. She asked the court to command the state home secretary to grant parole to her daughter in the petition.

Nalini would be staying with her mother, brother Bhagyanathan and sister Kalyani in her maternal home in Vellore for a month, the report said.

In former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi's assignation case, Nalini Sriharan and six other convicts were sentenced to life imprisonment. In May 1991, the former PM was killed by a suicide bomber of the Liberation of Tamil Tiger Eelam at Sriperumbudur.

The other six convicted people were Santhan, Perarivalan, Jayakumar, Murugan (Nalini's husband), Jayakumar, Robert Payas and Ravichandran.
