Digital Desk: On August 20, India's sixth Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi's birth anniversary is honoured as Sadbhavana Diwas. In English, "Sadbhavana" means "goodwill."

However, this day, also known as Harmony Day, strives to promote peace, national integration, and communal harmony among all religions. Several cultural activities and tournaments are being hosted across the country to commemorate the occasion. People also work together and make a promise to create peace and harmony in their surroundings.

Sadbhavana Diwas was established in 1992, nearly a year after Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated in a suicide bombing in Tamil Nadu's Sriperumbudur.

Rajiv Gandhi's contributions to the nation's prosperity mirrored his modern worldview. In 1986, he suggested a National Education Policy to upgrade and expand higher education in India.

In the same year, Rajiv Gandhi launched a central government-based institution, the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV), to enhance rural society by providing free residential education from Class 6th to Class 12th.

Following this, Rajiv Gandhi's efforts resulted in the establishment of Mahanagar Telephone Nigam (MTNL) in 1986. In addition, he constructed Public Call Offices (PCOs) to provide telephone service to outlying areas.

PM Modi also extended his prayer and pays tributes to Rajiv Gandhi on his 79th birth anniversary.

PM Modi posted on X, formerly known as Twitter saying, "On his birth anniversary, my tributes to former PM Shri Rajiv Gandhi Ji."
