The Congress had pledged to pay a housewife in every family Rs 2,000 per month if the party won the state Assembly elections in Karnataka in May of this year.

Digital Desk: On August 30, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will visit Mysuru and officially introduce the Gruha Lakshmi scheme of the Karnataka government.

The Congress had pledged to pay a housewife in every family Rs 2,000 per month if the party won the state Assembly elections in Karnataka in May of this year.

The registration period for the Gruha Lakshmi scheme, which was supposed to start on Friday (June 16), has been postponed by five days in June. DK Shivakumar, the deputy chief minister of Karnataka, had cited a technical issue as the cause of the delay in the scheme's registration.

The finance department had told the state government a few weeks after taking office that the Gruha Lakshmi plan would be challenging to implement due to financial limitations during the current financial year.

The letter from June that was sent to the Women and Child Welfare Department was available to India Today.

According to the letter, if the plan were to be followed, it would result in a sizable recurrent obligation and force all departments and accounts to significantly reduce their budgetary allocations. It also runs the risk of causing the state to experience a significant revenue shortfall and potentially breaking the Karnataka Fiscal Responsibility Act.

However, the Finance Department gave the scheme its in-principle approval after receiving orders from the Chief Minister and Finance Minister. However, the scheme's nod is accompanied by a few observations.
