Digital Desk: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has issued a ‘Red Alert’ for Assam and Meghalaya, warning of extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning over the next two days — Wednesday and Thursday. This is to be followed by an Orange Alert on Friday, which means that the weather will be unfavourable.

The warning that was issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has led to the execution of precautionary measures by both state governments. Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) recommended that the inhabitants, especially those living in low-indexed lands or regions affected by landslides, be cautious, not to travel unnecessarily, and buy the things of prime necessity, e.g., medicines, drinking water, and candles.

According to ASDMA has predicted that very heavy to extremely heavy rains will be experienced in isolated areas in many districts, and this could cause waterlogging, road and traffic jams, and an increased risk of localized disastrous landslides.

High levels of alert have been put on emergency services, and the authorities of the district have asked to pay closer attention to vulnerable areas. The people in the known landslide areas have been informed that they should relocate to relief camps or the safety shelters during the coming 72 hours.

Official weather advisories advised people to stay indoors during severe storms of rain and remain updated by weather news put forth by the local agencies.

ASDMA has promised to communicate regularly with the citizens by giving them updates and alerts to ensure that citizens are safe, and the situation is being monitored.
