Digital desk: Sanket Mahadev Sargar won silver in the men's 55 kg weightlifting event on Day 2 of the Games on Saturday, earning India its first medal at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham with a total list of 248 kg (113+135).

Sanket experienced a bit of sadness since he was headed for the gold medal, but an unfortunate injury he sustained during his second attempt at the clean and jerk round pushed him back. The clean and jerk round came to an exciting conclusion when Malaysia's Bin Kasdan Mohamad Aniq lifted 142 kg on his final attempt to win the gold medal with a total lift of 249 kg (107+142).

In the snatch category, the 21-year-old from Maharasthra successfully lifted 107 kg on his first try. He followed it up with lifts of 111 kg and 113 kg on his second and third tries, respectively.

Sanket finished the snatch phase in first place with a best weight of 113 kg, which is also a record for the country. Bin Kasdan Mohamad Aniq of Malaysia came in second with a best snatch lift of 107 kg, followed by Dilanka Isuru Kumara Yodage of Sri Lanka with a 105 kg lift. The Sri Lankan lifter's third effort, which weighed 112 kg, was initially cleared but afterwards ruled a foul by the referees.

After winning gold in the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, in December of the previous year, Sanket was one of the favourites to place third. The 21-year-old set a new national record in the snatch division by lifting 113 kg, earning her gold.
