Digital desk: The Supreme Court has granted the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) until June 15, 2024, to vacate its offices on Rouse Avenue in New Delhi. This decision comes as the site has been assigned to the Delhi High Court for the construction of judicial infrastructure.
A bench comprising Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, Justices J.B. Pardiwala, and Manoj Misra directed the AAP to approach the Land and Development Office for the allocation of land for its offices. The bench emphasized that the AAP has no lawful right to continue occupying the land. "We would request the L&DO to process the application and communicate its decision within a period of four weeks," stated the bench.
Senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, representing the AAP, highlighted the party's national stature, stating, "They are telling us as a national party we get nothing. I’m given Badarpur, while everyone else is in better places. "In view of the impending general elections, we grant time until June 15, 2024, to vacate the premises so that land allotted to expand the district judiciary's footprint can be utilized on an expeditious basis," the court said.
The Supreme Court had earlier directed the Delhi government and the Registrar General of the Delhi High Court to hold a meeting for the removal of encroachment by AAP on the land allotted to the HC at Rouse Avenue. The court, taking note of the circumstances, extended the deadline for the AAP to vacate its offices, recognizing the party's need to align with the land allotment for judicial use.
