Digital Desk: On the historic day of the Aditya-L1 mission launch in India, S Somnath, the Chief of ISRO received a devastating diagnosis of cancer. Somnath's battle took center stage despite the great accomplishment in space exploration. The day of the launch of India's Aditya-L1 mission presented a personal difficulty for ISRO Chief S Somnath, who received a cancer diagnosis. In an interview with Tarmak Media House, Somnath disclosed his unexpected health setback and acknowledged that growth had been found during a regular scan. 


Self-discovery during career success 


"There were some health issues during the Chandrayaan-3 mission launch. However, it was not clear to me at the time, I did not have a clear understanding of it," Somnath said.


Astonishing and encouraging 


The diagnosis not only surprised Somnath but also his family and colleagues, who stood by him during this challenging period. Somnath's battle played out alongside the country's professional victory as India commemorated the launch of Aditya L1, its first space-based solar observatory. 


He spoke about his encounter, saying, "The family was taken aback. However, I now see cancer and its management as a solution." He has an unshakeable spirit and a tremendous strength of character, which are evident in his realistic attitude to the illness and its treatment.


Treatment and recovery 


Somnath had surgery and chemotherapy after knowing of the diagnosis in order to treat hereditary disease. His resolute attitude and resilient nature supported him during treatment, even after the initial shock. When Somnath looked back on his experience, he was thankful for his quick recovery and emphasized the value of regular check-ups. 


"I was uncertain about a complete cure at the time, I was undergoing the process," he admitted, highlighting the ongoing nature of his battle against cancer.


"I will be undergoing regular checkups and scans. But, now I am completely cured, and have resumed my duties," Somnath said.


Resilience amidst uncertainty


Somnath acknowledged uncertainties during his cancer struggle, but his incredible recovery allowed him to return to work a few days after the procedure, displaying tenacity and fortitude in the face of hardship. After recovering from his illness, Somnath went back to work at ISRO, eager to keep supporting India's space research efforts.
