  • Student and youth wings SFI and DYFI have publicly extended their support to environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk in Guwahati, pressing the Central government to engage in discussions regarding his demands

The Students' Federation of India (SFI) and the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) have vocally backed environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk, urging the Central government to initiate dialogue with him. This show of solidarity from the student and youth organizations unfolded in Guwahati, signaling growing regional attention to Wangchuk's ongoing protest.

Wangchuk has been engaged in a hunger strike in Ladakh, advocating for constitutional safeguards for the region. His demands include statehood for Ladakh and protection under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, aimed at preserving its fragile ecosystem and unique indigenous culture. The Guwahati-based organizations underscored the critical need to address these demands through peaceful and constructive negotiations.

Adding a visual dimension to the widespread support in Assam's capital, graffiti artists recently painted a mural depicting Sonam Wangchuk on a pillar of the Basistha Flyover. This artistic expression serves as a poignant public testament to the increasing awareness and empathy for his cause, extending well beyond Ladakh's geographical boundaries.

The student and youth bodies emphasized the importance of democratic engagement, calling on the Centre to heed Wangchuk's appeals. Their concerted action in Guwahati highlights a broader regional appeal for the protection of both environmental integrity and indigenous rights across the nation.
