Digital Desk: The Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has taken a significant step to uphold the rights, justice, and social recognition of the third gender. In 2023, the Commission made an initiative to register Case No. 4668 to respond to the problems faced by the third gender community.

According to Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) Chairperson Santanu Bharali, stated that the initiative is targeted so that people of the third gender can exercise equal rights and access to justice. Consequently, as a part of this case, the third gender members have been kept in different cells in the state prisons and lock-ups, ensuring their safety and dignity.

Even though a hearing was scheduled today, no representatives from the third gender community were present.

The Commission will also plan to take action against the harassment faced by the third gender, who most of the time can be spotted begging in public places and commercial areas. Further hearings on the case will be held on another scheduled date.
