Digital Desk: The hills of Karbi Anglong once again came alive with colour, rhythm and cultural pride as the 52nd Karbi Youth Festival (KYF) 2026 concluded at Taralangso, Diphu, in the early hours of 20th February . Organised by the Karbi Cultural Society, the 5-day festival, held from February 15 to 19, celebrated the rich heritage, identity and traditions of the Karbi community while providing a vibrant platform for youth participation and artistic expression.
What began decades ago as a modest initiative to preserve and promote Karbi culture has today evolved into one of Northeast India’s most prominent cultural festivals. While deeply rooted in indigenous traditions, the Karbi Youth Festival has expanded beyond ethnic boundaries, welcoming cultural troupes and participants from across Assam and neighbouring northeastern states, fostering inter-community harmony and cultural exchange.
Celebration of Culture and Youth
The festival opened with the grand Rongketong Procession, a spectacular cultural parade marking the ceremonial inauguration. Over the five days, visitors witnessed a diverse range of events, including traditional dance and folk music performances, national-level rock contests, indigenous sports competitions, youth talent showcases, and exhibition stalls featuring handloom, handicrafts and local cuisine. Evening musical concerts featuring regional, national and international artists added to the festive atmosphere.
Star-Studded Performances
The 2026 edition stood out for its dynamic blend of local talent and internationally acclaimed performers. Among the highlights was a performance by internationally recognised Uzbek family band Havas Guruhi, which brought a global flavour to the festival. Adding national star power, Indian Idol Season 12 winner Pawandeep Rajan captivated the audience with a soulful and energetic live performance.
Popular Assamese band Jontro also electrified the stage with high-energy performances, while local bands, including Living Among Death, showcased emerging musical talent throughout the festival.
On the closing night, the celebrations reached a crescendo as massive crowds gathered across multiple stages. Pawandeep Rajan headlined the main stage with a power-packed performance. Simultaneously, Diphu’s own youth icon and popular Assamese singer Bhrigu Kashyap enthralled audiences on another open stage, receiving overwhelming applause from his hometown crowd.
Havas delivered a dynamic performance on a separate stage, ensuring that the audience remained mesmerised throughout the night. The musical extravaganza continued until the early hours, marking a memorable conclusion to KYF 2026.
Before his performance, Pawandeep Rajan interacted with the media and hummed a few lines from a song by legendary Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, describing him as his inspiration and idol. Meanwhile, Diphu-born Bhrigu Kashyap expressed pride and excitement at performing before his hometown audience, calling it an emotional and unforgettable experience.
Cultural and Economic Impact
Beyond celebration, the Karbi Youth Festival plays a significant role in boosting the local economy. Temporary markets thrive during the event, artisans and weavers find a wide customer base, and tourism sees a notable surge. For many local entrepreneurs, the festival represents one of the most important commercial opportunities of the year.
With its successful 52nd edition, the Karbi Youth Festival once again reaffirmed its status as a cultural landmark in Assam. By blending tradition with youthful energy and contemporary entertainment, KYF 2026 strengthened community identity, pride and unity, leaving behind cherished memories and renewed cultural spirit.
