Darshan had amassed a staggering debt of over ₹1 crore due to his compulsive betting habits...

Digital Desk: Darshan Babu, an engineer by profession, found himself entangled in the trap of cricket betting, particularly the Indian Premier League (IPL), starting in 2021. His penchant for placing major bets on IPL matches became a consuming passion, leading him down a path of financial ruin and tragedy.

The recent incident involving the suicide of his 23-year-old wife, Ranjitha, has shed light on the devastating consequences of Darshan's betting addiction. Ranjitha, unable to bear the constant harassment by creditors, tragically took her own life by hanging herself at their home in Karnataka's Chitradurga on March 18.

According to the family, Darshan had amassed a staggering debt of over ₹1 crore due to his compulsive betting habits. Despite working as an assistant engineer in the Minor Irrigation Department at Hosadurga, Darshan fell deeper into the clutches of IPL betting, borrowing exorbitant sums of money to fuel his addiction.

Ranjitha, who married Darshan in 2020, only discovered the truth about his involvement in betting in 2021, as claimed by her father, Venkatesh. Venkatesh revealed that his daughter was subjected to immense distress from the relentless harassment by moneylenders, ultimately driving her to take her own life.

In his complaint, Venkatesh implicated 13 men who allegedly lent money to Darshan, further exacerbating their financial woes. He highlighted how Darshan was coerced into betting with promises of quick riches by unscrupulous individuals who took advantage of his vulnerabilities.

The discovery of a suicide note further underscored the extent of the couple's suffering, detailing the relentless harassment they endured. Tragically, Darshan and Ranjitha leave behind a two-year-old son, now orphaned by the devastating consequences of IPL betting addiction.

This harrowing tale serves as a sobering reminder of the perils of gambling addiction and the devastating toll it can take on individuals and their loved ones. It calls for greater awareness, support, and intervention to prevent such tragedies from recurring in the future.
