The first edition of the Assam Youth Olympics began in the city today. The inaugural ceremony began at 6 p.m. at the Indira Gandhi Athletics Stadium.


Digital Desk: Lakhya Konwar, secretary of the Assam Olympic Association, told the media today that the Youth Games will start with a colourful ceremony. 


However, both the Chief Guest and the Guest of Honour at the opening ceremony, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal will be unable to present because they will be in New Delhi.


The opening ceremony will last nearly two hours and will feature several top state performers. Meanwhile, football and hockey teams from various districts arrived in the city today to compete. 


The Assam Olympic Association will host the Youth Olympics for the first time to provide a good platform for the state's aspiring athletes. 


The 6-day meet will showcase 35 districts and approximately 4500 players competing in 32 events across eight different venues. The participating teams are to arrive in the city today, and the competition will begin on Friday with hockey and football.
