Digital Desk: In a momentous achievement, Arunachal Pradesh has earned the coveted Geographical Indication (GI) tag for three of its indigenous products, as announced on Thursday. The products that have been granted GI status are Yak Churpi, Khamti rice, and Tangsa textile.
The news was formally revealed by officials following the approval of the GI Registry in Chennai on Wednesday. Dr. Mihir Sarkar, Director of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research’s National Research Centre (NRC), spoke enthusiastically about this development. He stated that Yak Churpi, one of the recognized products, is meticulously prepared from the milk of the unique Arunachali yak breed, primarily found in the West Kameng and Tawang districts of Arunachal Pradesh.
Dr. Sarkar highlighted that Yak Churpi is a naturally fermented milk product with deep cultural and historical significance. This recognition is not only a matter of pride for Arunachal Pradesh but also a significant boost to pastoral production systems and yak rearing in the country. The Brokpas, tribal yak pastoralists, play a crucial role in rearing these unique yaks, which migrate to higher altitudes during summers and return to mid-altitude mountainous regions.
The application for GI registration for Yak Churpi was initiated by the ICAR-NRC on Yak in December 2021, and its approval marks a significant milestone in preserving and promoting indigenous products and cultural traditions in Arunachal Pradesh.
