  • Incessant rains have caused the Tipkai River to breach its banks in Dhubri's Gauripur, washing away over 20 houses and submerging vast agricultural lands, particularly impacting jute cultivators

GAURIPUR, July 18: The Tipkai River has unleashed significant devastation in Dhubri district's Gauripur area, with over 20 houses reportedly swept away by its surging waters following days of relentless rainfall. The situation has become particularly alarming in the Baghmara and Baraibari localities, where communities residing along the riverbanks are grappling with severe hardships.

Beyond the immediate loss of homes, the agricultural sector has also borne a heavy brunt. Hundreds of bighas of prime crop areas now lie submerged, with jute cultivation being particularly devastated. Farmers, who depend on these lands for their livelihood, are facing substantial crop losses, raising concerns about their economic future.

Local residents have voiced long-standing grievances, highlighting that these areas have been vulnerable to river erosion for several years due to a perceived lack of adequate anti-erosion measures from successive administrations. The floodwaters are not only threatening residential zones but also posing a risk to Gauripur's renowned religious establishments.

Worried citizens emphasize the urgent need for intervention. “If proper steps are not taken, the situation may turn worse,” a section of the community stated, narrating the recurring challenges posed by the floods. As the crisis deepens, the affected populace has appealed to the state government for immediate relief and the implementation of robust, long-term anti-erosion strategies to safeguard lives and property in the region.
