Tiwa community in Dabargahat, Jagiroad, celebrates the agrarian spring festival ‘Sogra Festival ’
Digital Desk: The Tiwa community in Dabargahat, Jagiroad, celebrates the agrarian spring festival ‘Sogra Utsav’ with great enthusiasm, keeping alive age-old traditions. Observed annually during any week of the Assamese months of Phagun and Sot, the festival holds deep cultural and agricultural significance for the Tiwa people of central Assam.
This year, the festival was organised as a three-day event under the initiative of the Dabargahat Panthai Khel Committee. One of the key highlights of the festival is the ritual offering of betel nut and betel leaves to the presiding deity. According to traditional beliefs, only after this offering can the Tiwa community begin using betel nut and engage in agricultural activities for the season.
Rituals during the festival are also performed using items brought through traditional exchange from the historic Jonbeel Mela of the Gobha kingdom, reflecting a long-standing cultural linkage.
The celebration witnessed a lively and festive atmosphere, with a rich display of traditional Tiwa dances and cultural performances, showcasing the vibrant heritage of the community.
