Digital Desk: West Bengal chief minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee stated on Monday that her party will back the Congress in areas where it is strong in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Notably, this is the first time Banerjee has clarified Trinamool's stance on a possible plan for opposition unity in the upcoming election.

"Let them fight wherever the Congress is strong. We will assist them; there is nothing wrong with that. But they must also support other political parties," Banerjee told media at the state secretariat.

However, in order to gain support, Congress must also support other parties, she stated.

The Trinamool chief also stated unequivocally that she anticipated the seat-sharing formula to prioritize contenders in regions where they excelled.

"Strong regional parties must be given importance," she stated.

Banerjee previously praised the people of Karnataka following the BJP's loss of power there, while avoiding reference to the grand old party with which Trinamool has had run-ins in the past.
