Digital Desk: Travelling on expressways and national highways will become more expensive on April 1, as the National Highway Authorities of India (NHAI) have declared a 3.5–7% increase in toll fares. According to reports, one will therefore be required to pay an extra 10% fare for shorter distances.
Reportedly, the NHAI has hiked toll rates in response to the increased number of vehicles on the road. As a result of increased four-wheeler traffic on some national highways and expressways, toll prices will increase by up to 7 percent throughout India.
The reports also revealed that the charges for four-wheelers on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway have been raised by Rs 5. Toll rates on other important routes, such as the Eastern Peripheral Expressway, have been raised by 5% to 7%.

A source from Baihata Charial stated that the toll gate prices in the state will rise once again. There will be a 10% increase in the toll rates. The previous rate for a light motor vehicle was Rs 125; however, from April 1, vehicle owners will have to pay Rs 130. In the case of commercial vehicles, a tax of Rs 210 instead of Rs 200 will be levied in one-way journeys, and a tax of Rs 440 instead of Rs 420 will be levied in the case of heavy vehicles such as buses/trucks.
While speaking to the media, Congress leader Manjeet Mahanta stated that the government is only interested in looting the common people. "Toll taxes are paid for road maintenance, but have you noticed any improvement in the roadways? In the name of the toll tax, people are being harassed," Mahanta said.
The transporters would have to bear the majority of the burden of the increase. In addition, the increase in toll tax would have an effect on all goods, including essentials, and commoners would have to burn a larger hole in their pockets.
