The aircraft, identified as a Chinese-made F-7 BGI fighter jet, was on a routine training mission when it went down around 1:06 PM
Digital Desk: A Bangladesh Air Force training jet crashed into Milestone School and College in Dhaka’s Uttara area on Monday afternoon, killing at least 20 people and injuring over 150 others. It was a training flight by the aircraft, a Chinese-made F-7 BGI fighter jet, which crashed at about 1:06 PM, leaving a trail of desolation at the school premises with students in attendance.
Witnesses reported the explosion as a supersonic bang accompanied by a huge blast. Fire services and military rescuers attended to the scene as security guards tried to put off the smoke and flames coming out of the building. Panic and chaos spread they continued to grow throughout the territory where wounded students and staff members were pulled out of the debris and taken to the local hospitals.
In an immature statement, the public relations office of the Bangladesh Army has confirmed that the plane was of the Air Force, but they did not comment on why the plane had crashed and whether or not the pilot could eject in time.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his deep condolences over the tragic incident. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he wrote: “Deeply shocked and saddened at the loss of lives, many of them young students, in a tragic air crash in Dhaka. Our hearts go out to the bereaved families. We pray for the swift recovery of those injured. India stands in solidarity with Bangladesh and is ready to extend all possible support.”
Officials have launched a formal investigation into the cause of the crash. The F-7 BGI is a modernized version of the Chengdu J-7 and is largely used by the Bangladesh Air Force in training matters. This crash has cast doubts on the safety procedures and maintenance rates of planes in the force.
