Digital Desk: A tragic incident has left the community of Kalaigaon in Udalguri district in deep shock following the discovery of a retired teacher and his wife dead in an apparent double suicide.

The deceased, identified as Narendra Saikia and his wife Damayanti Saikia, were found in the bathroom of their residence in Gerua, Beltali.

Authorities recovered a suicide note in which the couple cited overwhelming financial hardship and prolonged illness as the primary reasons for their extreme step.

Additionally, three bottles of poisonous pesticide were found in the bathroom during the search.

Narendra Saikia was well-regarded in the locality as a simple and soft-spoken individual, and the news of the couple's passing has cast a pall of gloom over the area.

According to sources, their elder son had gone to a relative's house the previous day, while the younger son resides in Guwahati for his studies.

The incident came to light after the couple's two sons, who were unable to reach them over phone throughout the morning, requested the neighbours to check on their wellbeing.

Upon inspection, neighbours discovered both Narendra and Damayanti Saikia hanging in the bathroom.

Kalaigaon Police and a magistrate arrived promptly at the scene to begin an investigation. The bodies were sent to Udalguri Civil Hospital for post-mortem examination.
