Digital Desk: Tension flares once again in Assam’s Goalpara district as violence breaks out during an eviction drive in the Krishnai-Paikan Reserved Forest area. The situation turned volatile as the settlers allegedly tried to confront and attack police officers handling the eviction exercise.
To bring the situation under control, police reportedly fired warning shots into the air. However, the confrontation escalated, resulting in casualties. One person, identified as Kuchumuddin Sheikh, died on the spot, while another injured individual is being rushed to the hospital. One of the people who got shot, known to the police as Kuchumuddin Sheikh, has died on the spot, and another wounded man is on his way to the hospital. According to reports, three people were injured and shot during the incident.
The deceased man has been identified as Hussain of Chakowat who was among those demolished during the latest clearance operation. The violence followed the demolition of several illegal houses in the reserved forest. After losing their homes, many evicted families had taken temporary shelter under tarpaulin tents.
When the police came in the wee hours of the morning to remove these makeshift structures and drive the people out, it triggered the violent clash. According to those who have witnessed the event, there was mass panic due to the uncontrolled situation.
The atmosphere in the area, particularly around Vidyapara, remains tense. Security has been increased and the police is now at full action mode to ensure that nothing is aggravated further. Local authorities are closely monitoring the situation, while residents fear more unrest in the coming days.
The incident adds to the growing debate over the government’s eviction policy and the use of force during such operations, especially when it involves vulnerable and displaced communities.
