Digital Desk: A violent confrontation broke out early this morning at the Mokrong Tea Estate in Golghat district following a dispute over illegal land encroachment.
The incident was triggered by an attempt to forcibly occupy a portion of land in Section 28 of the estate.
Two individuals, identified as Phukan Nayak and Kamal Kachari, had reportedly encroached upon the land and erected bamboo fencing to claim the area.
Upon learning of the unauthorised occupation, the garden committee's president Mahesh Tanti and secretary Jiten Chaotal reached the site and demanded the immediate removal of the structures.
However, the situation turned violent when the encroachers allegedly attacked Mahesh Tanti and Jiten Chaotal with sharp tools, including hoes and machetes.
Jiten Chaotal sustained severe injuries in the assault. He is currently undergoing treatment at the Golaghat Civil Hospital.
News of the assault sparked immediate outrage among the tea garden workers. Hundreds gathered in protest, moving to the site to demolish the illegal fences.
Merapani Police arrived shortly after to take the two accused into custody.
However, the situation remained tense as the angry mob intercepted the police vehicle, physically assaulting Phukan Nayak and Kamal Kachari before they could be transported from the scene.
Authorities are currently investigating the matter.
