Digital Desk: Every year on May 21, the death anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi is observed as Anti-Terrorism Day.  In 1991, while the former PM was campaigning for his political party (Congress)at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu, he was murdered in a suicide bombing by a woman belonging to the Liberation of Tamil Tigers Eelam (LTTE) terrorist squad.

The purpose of Anti-Terrorism Day is to disseminate the message of peace and to educate people about the destruction caused by terrorism. It is a day to promote Indian unity and prevent the youth from becoming associated with terrorist organizations. This day also serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by citizens, troops, and police officers to keep the country safe from terrorist attacks.


Anti-Terrorism Day Pledge


On Anti-Terrorism Day, all government offices, public sector undertakings (PSUs), and other public organizations take an anti-terrorism pledge.


"We, the people of India, having abiding faith in our country's tradition of non-violence and tolerance, hereby solemnly affirm to oppose with our strength all forms of terrorism and violence. We pledge to uphold and promote peace, social harmony and understand among all fellow human beings and fight the forces of disruption threatening human lives and values."
