Sidhu was taken to Patiala's Mata Kaushalya Hospital for a medical checkup after he complained of chest pain earlier in the day.

Digital Desk: After surrendering before a Patiala court on Friday, cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu was taken to Patiala Central Jail.

Sidhu was taken to Patiala's Mata Kaushalya Hospital for a medical checkup after he complained of chest pain earlier in the day.

The Supreme Court convicted Sidhu to one year in prison in a 1988 road rage case on Thursday.

Reportedly, the former Punjab Congress chief will be given a table, a chair, two turbans, a cupboard, a blanket, three sets of underwear, two towels, a mosquito net, a pen, a notebook, a pair of shoes, two bed-sheets, four pairs of kurta-pajamas, and two pillow covers at Patiala jail.

Sources quoted that Sidhu's prisoner number is 241383 and that he has been allocated barrack number 7.

Sidhu was earlier let off with a fine of Rs 1,000 in March 2018 and has now been sentenced to the maximum penalty under Section 323 of the Indian Penal Code.

On May 15, 2018, the Supreme Court of India overturned a Punjab and Haryana High Court decision convicting Sidhu of culpable homicide and sentencing him to three years in prison, finding him guilty of inflicting harm to the victim Gurnam Singh, a senior citizen.

However, in September 2018, the Supreme Court agreed to consider a review petition submitted by the victim's relatives and sent Sidhu a notice.

Earlier this year, just before the Punjab elections, Sidhu's wife, Navjot Kaur Sidhu, claimed that the issue was being pursued at the request of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikramjit Majithia.

On Thursday, the apex court rejected Gurnam Singh's family's plea that Sidhu be found guilty of culpable homicide not amounting to murder under the Indian Penal Code. The judge, however, sentenced him to three years in prison, the maximum penalty for the crimes.
