Digital Desk: In a brutal act of poaching, a wild elephant was shot dead in broad daylight on Dikchak Hill, under the jurisdiction of the Topatoli Range Forest Office.
The incident reportedly took place around 9 am, highlighting a daring breach of wildlife security.
The carcass was found with two distinct bullet wounds to the head, leading authorities to suspect the involvement of poachers from neighbouring Meghalaya.
In a gruesome display of cruelty, the poachers allegedly severed the elephant's trunk after killing it.
Preliminary investigations suggest the elephant was targeted for its meat, which is reportedly sold in Meghalaya markets for prices ranging between Rs 1,200 to Rs 2,000 per kilogram.
This tragedy is the latest in a series of poaching incidents that have plagued the region recently.
It follows a similar killing in the Sonaikuchi forest area of Jagiroad, raising urgent concerns regarding the safety of the local elephant population and the need for intensified patrolling.
