Digital Desk: Every year on July 17, World Day for International Justice is marked to commemorate the development of the global justice system and to advance victim rights. It emphasises the necessity of preventing impunity and delivering justice to those who have suffered from war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide. This day is also known as International Criminal Justice (ICC) Day.

Why is it observed as World Day for International Justice?

The historic adoption of the Rome Statute and the establishment of the new international criminal justice system in 1998 are commemorated on World Day for International Justice.

It is believed that the creation of the International Criminal Court marked a turning point for world peace and the rule of law. It is the first independent, permanent international court with the power to try defendants charged with grave transgressions of human rights and international humanitarian law. The ICC is not a substitute for national courts, but it is available when a nation is unable or unwilling to carry out investigations or punish offenders.

The Court's treaty has been ratified by more than 139 nations. It has been ratified by nearly 80 states, which are a representation of every continent on earth.
