Digital Desk: Union Home Minister Amit Shah withdrew three bills aimed at replacing existing criminal laws on Tuesday, introducing a fresh set of draft legislation. Shah emphasized that rather than making numerous official amendments to incorporate recommendations from the Parliamentary Committee on Home Affairs, the government opted to present entirely new bills with the suggested changes.
Members of Parliament requested ample time to scrutinize the three new bills. The discussion on these bills is scheduled for Thursday, with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla allocating a total of 12 hours for deliberations. The voting is slated for Friday. Shah defended the timing of the bill introduction on Tuesday, stating it allows members a 48-hour window to study the draft laws. He noted that the revisions primarily involved adjustments to grammar and language, with five sections undergoing modifications.
The redrafted bills—Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Bill, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam—aim to replace the Code of Criminal Procedure Act, 1898, the Indian Penal Code, 1860, and the Indian Evidence Act, 1872, respectively.
Shah dismissed suggestions to refer the measures to a joint committee, asserting that the standing committee has already provided numerous recommendations.
