Digital Desk: Jayanta Ray, a renowned boxer and accomplished mountaineer from Assam, passed away on 1st February  at a private hospital in Guwahati. He was a celebrated sportsman who made significant contributions to both boxing and mountaineering in the state and the country.


Ray was a former Assam State Boxing Champion from 1985 to 1991 and represented the state at the All India Boxing Championships during the same period. After retiring from competitive boxing, he continued to serve the sport as a senior referee and judge with the Assam Boxing Association. He was also associated with the 4th Assam Police Battalion as a boxer.


Beyond boxing, Jayanta Ray left a lasting legacy in Indian mountaineering. He completed both basic and advanced mountaineering courses at the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute in Darjeeling, earning a distinguished grade. He successfully scaled several major Himalayan peaks, including Bhagirathi II, Deo Tibba, and Mount Srikailash.


In 1997, he created history by becoming the first mountaineer from Northeast India to summit a peak higher than 25,437 feet, the third-highest peak in the Indian Himalayas. During the Kargil War in 1999, Ray also participated in expeditions in the Kashmir Himalayas, demonstrating exceptional courage and dedication.


Jayanta Ray’s passing is a profound loss to the sporting and adventure communities of Assam and the nation. He will be remembered for his discipline, bravery, and lifelong contributions to boxing and mountaineering.
