Guwahati: In the recent development Assam government has decided to provide protected class status for indigenous people. This status will be provided to four tribal communities under two tribal belts in the Dhemaji district.

This initiative will go a long way in securing the land rights of the indigenous people in the State. The four communities under the protected class include Tai-Ahom, Chutia, Koch-Rajbingshi (including Koch) and Gorkha.

Murkongselek Jonai and Sissi Tangani (newly formed) are the two tribal belts which are new in the list. These protected class communities would be provided with special advantages.

As per the decision taken by Assam Cabinet on October 19, 2021, these protected classes will be benefited. They will be provided with the settlement of government land for ordinary cultivation and allied purposes. 

Additionally, the benefit includes restriction of transfer of patta land to other non-protected communities/ non-permanent residents. Including, guard against the eviction of unauthorised occupants.
