Guwahati: Giving a massive relief to the employees of Hindustan Paper Corporation Limited (HPCL), Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the state government has reached an agreement with the employees of HPCL to resolve long pending issues of their salaries and dues.


The decision was taken during a meeting chaired by CM Sarma on Tuesday after a 4-hour long meeting to resolve the long pending issues of the employees.


“Finally reached agreement with the workers and employees of Hindustan Paper Corporation to resolve long pending issues of their salaries and dues. discussion lasted over 4 hours in my office and concluded at 2 AM. Back to home now. Will leave for north Assam tour at 8 AM.” Tweeted CM Sarma.

Notably, the two HPCL paper mills, Cachar Paper Mill at Pachgram in Hailakandi district and Nagaon Paper Mill at Jagiroad in Morigaon district, have been non-functional since October 2015 and March 2017, respectively.


Reportedly, the employees of Cachar Paper Mill have not received their salaries for the past 57 months, while employees of Nagaon paper mill did not receive theirs for the past 55 months.


Earlier, the liquidator of HPCL, Kuldeep Verma, issued an eviction notice to the paper mills’ employees, asking them to vacate their quarters within 15 days.

Till now, atleast 93 employees of the two paper mills have died in the last 58 months.
