In a significant announcement for the Catholic Church in Northeast India, Pope Leo XIV has appointed Bishop Albert Hemrom, previously serving as the Bishop of Dibrugarh, as the Coadjutor Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Guwahati. The appointment was formally conveyed by officials on July 16, underscoring a new chapter for ecclesiastical leadership in the region.
Bishop Hemrom, born on February 27, 1969, in Konapathar Village, Assam, brings deep local roots and extensive experience to his new role. His journey into priesthood began with formation at St. Joseph’s Minor Seminary in Dibrugarh, followed by theological studies at Oriens Theological College in Shillong. He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Dibrugarh on April 25, 1999.
Throughout his distinguished career, Bishop Hemrom has held various pastoral and academic positions. His early assignments included Assistant Parish Priest at St. Francis of Assisi Church, Rajabari, and Prefect of Studies at St. Joseph’s Minor Seminary. He later became Parish Priest of St. Francis of Assisi Church before dedicating himself to advanced academic pursuits. His educational background includes a Licentiate in Canon Law from St. Peter’s Pontifical Institute, Bengaluru, and a Doctorate in Canon Law from the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome. Post-doctoral studies, he served in crucial diocesan capacities such as Judicial Vicar, Rector, and Lecturer in Canon Law at Oriens Theological College.
This appointment as Coadjutor Archbishop means Bishop Hemrom will assist the current Archbishop of Guwahati and is positioned to succeed him. His elevation is seen as a pivotal development, ensuring continuity and experienced leadership within the Catholic community across Assam and the broader Northeast.
