Digital Desk: Hours after the Election Commission of India (ECI) released the draught proposal for the Assam delimitation process, state Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reacted to the requirement that the current Jalukbari constituency, which he has represented since 2001, be divided into three parts.

The chief minister expressed disappointment that the Jalukbari constituency, which he has represented since 2001, will no longer exist.

CM Sarma Tweeted, "The draught delimitation published by ECI today stipulates that the current Jalukbari constituency, which I have represented since 2001, will no longer exist as it has been divided into three parts. This news has made me quite sad. However, I appreciate the draught paper since it accurately illustrates the sentiments of Assam."

Earlier in the day, the ECI released its draught recommendation for the delimitation of Assembly and Parliamentary Constituencies in Assam. This was an important step towards reshaping the state's political landscape. The last delimitation procedure took place over four decades ago, in 1976, making this modification a long-awaited development for Assam.

Based on the 2001 Census statistics, the number of Assembly seats would remain at 126, while the number of Lok Sabha seats would remain unchanged at 14.

Among the proposal's main features are 19 Assembly seats and 2 Parliamentary seats allocated for Scheduled Tribes (STs), enabling improved political participation for these marginalised communities. In addition, 9 Assembly seats and 1 Parliamentary seat will be designated for Scheduled Castes (SCs), with the goal of empowering these historically disadvantaged groups.
