Guwahati: A massive eviction drive was carried out on Tuesday in the Dhalpur area of Darrang district, on the suspicion of the presence of 'illegal immigrants’ in the area.
Nearly 800 houses along with 4 prayer halls have been demolished in the eviction carried out by the Darrang district administration.
As per reports, it is suggested that around 4,005 acres of government land have been encroached upon by 'illegal immigrants' through unlawful acts. People residing in these areas have been evicted post demolition.
The administration has carried out the eviction in these areas several times in the past following demands and requests claimed by various organisations of the area, yet the area is being trespassed by ‘illegal citizens’ for ages. Now the question arises - Where will the evicted citizens go or will they return back to the place from where they were evicted?
The AAMSU condemned this act of the government and demanded that the evicted people have to be provided with shelter, food, and water along with proper land establishment.
The government is planning to construct multiple agricultural projects in these areas for generating employment and revenues on a large scale, with an estimated cost of Rupees 9 crores and 60 lacs. At present nearly 500 youths are undergoing training to operate this project.
The administration evicted around 800 families from this proposed site today for a better cause.
