Digital Desk : In a major breakthrough in the high-profile cyber defamation case involving Archita Phukan, Dibrugarh Police have arrested the prime accused, Pratim Bora, from Tinsukia. Bora once dated Archita Phukan, who allegedly circulated morphed and explicit images of her across multiple social media platforms using advanced AI tools.

These defaming contents falsely alleged that Archita's involvement in pornographic activities and said that she was residing in the United States. Police have confirmed these claims were entirely fabricated, aimed at tainting her image after a personal break.

The case was registered under Dib PS Case No. 234/25 after Archita, a resident of Dibrugarh, lodged an FIR. In the course of the investigation, police also found out that Bora had used platforms such as Midjourney AI, Desire AI, and OpenArt AI to create manicured images. He also created dummy Gmail accounts and social media accounts to introduce the content anonymously.

Bora has been charged under sections 336(4), 356(2), 74, 75, 294, 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) on charges of cyber harassment, defamation, obscenity, and infringement of privacy. He is now under police custody, and he will be taken to court where the police will request him to be remanded for seven days so that, in the process, he can be cross-questioned and his digital evidence retrieved.

Addressing the media, SP-in-charge Sizal Agarwal confirmed that AI had been used in the generation of the visuals and that data has been sought by various tech platforms to help the probe. She also warned that anyone caught sharing, forwarding, and commenting abusively on the morphed content, even after being aware of the truth, will also be subject to legal prosecution.

The case highlights the darker side of AI misuse and underscores the urgent need for digital responsibility. The authorities seek the intervention of the people and advise people to be sensitive and not to increase defamatory or false content on the internet.
