Last Monday, the mess councils of the institute's dormitories 12, 13, and 14 set aside six tables in the communal mess area for vegetarians.

Digital Desk: Days after some students at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay participated in a quiet protest against "vegetarian only" tables arranged by a mess council, the institution is said to have fined one of them Rs 10,000.

Last Monday, the mess councils of the institute's dormitories 12, 13, and 14 set aside six tables in the communal mess area for vegetarians. The row started when some students ate non-vegetarian food at one of the "veg-only" tables while staging a silent protest against the mess's division.

A committee that investigated the whole situation discovered that certain students were attempting to aggressively ruin the institute's atmosphere. While two students have not yet been recognised, the institute has fined one student Rs 10,000.

On Monday, the dormitory management sent the student an email informing him that the institute had fined him Rs 10,000 and that this sum would be taken out of his Special Mention Accounts (SMA) account.

Following the student demonstration, the mess council met to consider the grievances.

The meeting minutes noted that "This act was a premeditated attempt to disrupt the peace and harmony within the mess, in defiance of the advice provided by the Associate Dean SA (Students' Affairs)."

"The mess council decided to solicit the aid of student representatives from the councils of hostels 12, 13, and 14 to help identify the other two parties involved in the incident. They will also be subject to appropriate disciplinary punishment once their identities have been confirmed," it added.
