New Delhi: Well known water conservationist Rajendra Singh – who is also popularly known as the ‘Waterman of India’ - said on Saturday that water scarcity continues to be at a critical state in India. He also added that in the in the next seven years India could face a climate refugee crisis similar to Europe.
Singh stated this while speaking at the India Today Conclave 2021 held at the Taj Palace Hotel in New Delhi on Saturday.
On the ocassion Singh also said that India cannot become ‘paanidaar’ untill a balance between recharge and decharge of water is maintained. He also added that this balance would only be possible when there is a community driven decentralized system for water management in the country.

Further, he expressed his concern regarding the excessive pumping of groundwater, due to which waterbanks in the country are emptying.
Singh also gave an exampe of Europe which is witnessing climate refugees from many parts of Africa. He also stated that Indians are not a climatic refugees until now, however, if this continues in the next seven years, Indians could too face a similar situation.
