Digital Desk: A prominent businessman from Hailakandi, Assam lost his life in a tragic stampede incident that broke out early in the morning of Wednesday at the Maha Kumbh Mela. The incident took place between 1 to 2 am on Wednesday where the businessman lost his life during the occasion of Mauni Amavasya.

Niti Ranjan Pal was a well-known businessman who ran the popular sweet shop "O Sweets". Pal had been visiting Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj to participate in the sacred bathing ritual. The 69-year-old businessman was among the 10 people who died during the unfortunate incident. Nearly 30 women were also injured due to the incident and immediately rushed to the nearest hospital.

Eyewitnesses said that the stampede took place because of the devotion-related confusion among devotees. Others said that some people climbed over the barricades, and people fell on each other at Akhara Marg.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the incident and paid condolences to the victims' families. He spoke to the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanth regarding the incident. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP Chief JP Nadda also inquired about the situation.

CM Yogi Adityanath urged everyone to avoid crowds at the Triveni Sangam Ghat and take the sacred dip at their nearest ghats.

In a high-level meeting in Lucknow, CM Yogi Adityanath said, "Between 1 am to 2 am, at the akhara route where arrangements were made for the Amrit Snan of the akharas, some devotees crossed over the barricades and were critically injured. They were immediately rushed to hospital where treatment was promptly ensured."
