The Indigenous Tribal Leaders' Forum, a Kuki-Zo community association, agreed to conditionally postpone the burial for five days...

Digital Desk:  On Thursday, the Manipur High Court ordered that the status quo remain intact at the intended burial site in Haolai Khopi village, Churachandpur district, where the Kuki-Zo group had planned a funeral rite for 35 individuals murdered in the ethnic war.

Acting Chief Justice MV Muralidharan issued the order after a hearing at 6 a.m.

Meanwhile, the Indigenous Tribal Leaders' Forum (ITLF), a Kuki-Zo community association, agreed to postpone the burial for five days in response to Union Home Minister Amit Shah's plea.

According to them, Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga has also demanded the same.

The MHA (Ministry of Home Affairs) asked us to postpone the burial for another five days, and if we did, we would be allowed to bury in the same spot, and the government would legalise the site for the burial.

"The Mizoram Chief Minister had also made a similar request," the ITLF stated.

"After long deliberation with various stakeholders late at night, it said, we have come to the conclusion that we will consider the MHA's request provided they give us a written assurance on five demands."

Following the ITLF's appeal, extra central security troops rushed to the Bishnupur-Churachandpur district boundary.

More than 160 people have died and hundreds have been injured in ethnic confrontations in Manipur since May 3, when a 'Tribal Solidarity March' was held in the hill areas to oppose the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) designation.
