Digital Desk: The Manipur government announced on Thursday that families with more than four children will no longer be eligible for any government benefits.

The state cabinet, led by chief minister N Biren Singh, approved the establishment of the Manipur State Population Commission as an ordinance on Thursday and ruled that no government assistance will be offered to families with more than four children.

Under the Manipur State Population Commission, once the decision is implemented, if any couple has more than four children, no government benefits will be provided to any member of the family.

Earlier, the state legislative assembly unanimously approved a private member's resolution to establish a population commission in the state.

According to the 2011 Census, Manipur has a population of 28.56 lakh. In 2001, it was 22.93 lakh.

Earlier, neighbouring Assam had issued an order barring any person with more than two children on or after January 1, 2021, from single or multiple partners, from government jobs.

Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Khumukcham Joykisan has proposed the resolution due to the alleged infiltration of outsiders into the state. Citing government data, he stated that the 153.3% population growth in Manipur's hill districts from 1971 to 2001 surged dramatically to 250% from 2001 to 2011.
