Digital Desk: Meghalaya Trinamool Congress seeks the accountability of vacant posts-old from the MDA Government

According to a report unveiled earlier this year by the independent think-tank Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), Meghalaya ranked third lowest in the country; however, the on-ground reality is far off from data and numbers. Under the NPP-led MDA government, the economy of Meghalaya is sinking expeditiously and along with it is the rate of unemployment.

Richard Marak, Meghalaya Trinamool Congress, Tura District Convenor, showed concern for the startling rise in unemployment in the state and said, “The youth of Meghalaya is hopeless today. MDA government is forcing them to migrate to other states and the government is not at all serious about it. The government is not filling the vacancies; their intent and priorities are misplaced. Who is to be accountable? The Meghalaya Disaster Alliance is ruining the future of Meghalaya!”

Earlier today, Trinamool Congress, the Opposition in the state, hit out strongly at the Conrad Sangma-led MDA government on the current vacancies left out in the administration. Questioning the government's accountability, the party tweeted, “3,367 government posts-old lie VACANT in Meghalaya, while the youth have to migrate in search of jobs. Who will take accountability for these failures? When will the sons of the soil get their dues?”

The news came to light through an RTI filed by activist Disparsing Rani. Mr Rani mentioned that various departments have yet to notify the District Selection Committees (DSCs) or the Meghalaya Public Service Commission (MPSC) about the need to advertise and conduct interviews for more than 3,000 vacant positions in government jobs.

Another RTI filed by social activist Maxbirth Momin in Tura, West Garo Hills, revealed that Tura Civil Hospital has at least 157 nursing vacancies and 18 vacancies for various staff positions. In Tura, which is the home of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, basic healthcare infrastructure is in disorder. The report revealed that despite the proposed staff requirement of 271, the 200-bed hospital is operating with only 100 employees.
