Digital Desk: In a groundbreaking move, the Shillong Archdiocese of the Catholic Church has authorized priests to offer blessings to same-sex couples, a significant step towards inclusivity. Archbishop Victor Lyngdoh conveyed this decision on December 22, 2023, through a formal letter. The announcement follows the declaration 'Fiducia Supplicans,' sanctioned by Pope Francis via The Dicastery for the Doctrine of Faith on December 18, 2023.

However, it's essential to note that these blessings do not equate to the church's formal marriage rituals, as emphasized in the communication. The Archbishop clarified that while the Church remains steadfast in its doctrine of marriage, this gesture of blessing should not be interpreted as approval of the union.

The decision reflects the Catholic Church's evolving stance on inclusivity, acknowledging the necessity to embrace LGBT individuals. Pope Francis' recent authorization to bless same-sex couples marks a historic shift, fostering a more open and accepting approach within the Roman Catholic Church.
